MIT's Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Department hosted a unique reunion event for the Class of 1971, led by Senior Lecturer Gim Hom. This reunion wasn't just a get-together; it was a hands-on learning experience, a 'last class' for Hom, who used it to teach analog and digital design concepts through real-world projects. The event took place in the Cypress Engineering Design Studio, a makerspace and classroom, where participants worked on two projects: a simplified electrocardiogram (ECG) and an audio amplifier.
The first project involved soldering a printed circuit board (PCB) to create an ECG, allowing alumni to view their heartbeats. Hom explained that this hands-on approach is a departure from traditional theory-heavy teaching. "In 6.2040 (Analog Lab), I use the ECG as a platform for teaching signal acquisition, filtering, and display. Students first analyze the design of an ECG circuit and then build and solder the board themselves, gaining hands-on experience with printed circuit board assembly. For many students, this is their first exposure to soldering."
The second project introduced surface mount solder, a skill that was not yet popular during their undergraduate years. Hom highlighted the importance of this technology in modern electronics, stating, "Modern electronics primarily rely on surface-mount technology (SMT)." The project involved assembling a small USB-powered audio amplifier, which, despite its simplicity, produced impressive sound quality.
The event was not just about nostalgia; it was an opportunity for Hom to impart his knowledge and for the alumni to reconnect with their technical roots. Technical instructors Anthony Pennes and Liam Ackerman, also celebrating their own reunions, were on hand to assist and educate attendees about the Engineering Design Studio's capabilities. Hom expressed his satisfaction, saying, "It was wonderful to see alumni leave with a working board with big smiles on their faces."
